Master teacher Tavia Richards has taught English Language Arts at Albion for the past 12 years. In Tavia’s classroom, students know they have a teacher who cares about them. She has the ability to break down reading and writing skills into manageable chunks; in writing, she helps them become proficient in small skills like creating a hook, making a claim, and finding evidence before they put it all together. And, she does this in a way that is motivating and engaging for the students. Many students can attribute their love of reading to Ms. Richards. Tavia has been exemplary in supporting Canyon’s vision and goals by conscientiously implementing the district’s instructional priorities in her classroom. In addition, she uses Canvas consistently and is a Canvas Double Black Diamond. At Albion, Tavia is a member of the school BLT and head of the ELA department; she also works as a member of district ELA Leads. Tavia shows her commitment to students in her role as discussion leader of the Albion Book Club and as an advisor for the National Jr. Honor Society. Tavia has organized teacher appreciation week with the NJHS students for several years. Each year she designs and creates academic and inspiring gifts for everyone on our staff. At the time of year when teachers energy needs a boost, her acts of kindness inspire us to do better. Because of Tavia’s positive attitude, her enthusiasm, her intelligence, her pink sparkly personality, and her dedication as a teacher, we are proud to have her as Albion’s 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year.
