Championship Debate Tournament

What do you get when you take 52 determined debaters, a championship debate tournament, a bunch of pizza, piles of research, and a whole bunch of hard work? Well, I’ll tell you! You end up with 30 winners (which is 57% of the team)! The Championship debate tournament took place at Draper Park Middle School on April 25th, 2024.

 

Policy Debate: 

  • FIRST Place – Gary Lyhnakis 
  • 2nd Place Team (and qualified for State) – Gage Christensen and Habeeb Khan 
  • 5th Place Team (and qualified for State) – Will Croft and Lincoln Wong
  • Additional Top 10% Winners: 
  • John Vaughan and Marcus Broderick (and qualified for State)
  • Cason Plott and Don Guymon (and qualified for State)
  • Bridger Swenson and Connor Moon (and qualified for State)
  • Charlie Peterson 
  • Audrey Curry 

 

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: 

  • FIRST Place (and qualified for State) – Henry Slabbert 
  • 4th Place (and qualified for State) – Neve Chamberlain 
  • 5th Place (and qualified for State) – Greyson Bills 
  • Top 10% – Sophia Bergstrom 

 

Oratory Speaking: 

  • 5th Place (and won 1st place in all 4 rounds) – Bridget Smit 
  • Top 10 % (and qualified for State)
    • Ellie Longaker

Extemporaneous Speaking: 

Top 10 % (and qualified for state) – Charlie Radzinski 

 

Additionally: 

  • Gary Lyhnakis won the MVP award for being Albion’s most successful overall debater in his 3 semesters of debate. 
  • Chloe Bergen won the Coach’s award for being the debater with the most heart, commitment, determination, and perseverance. 
  • The following students were recognized for their commitment to debate. Since they’ve each chosen to take debate class 3 separate times, they were awarded a special 3-year debater award.
