Author Emily Inouye Huey, author of the historical fiction novel Beneath the Wide Silk Sky and the children’s book Wat Kept Playing, visited our Book Bunch meeting on January 21.
Huey’s novel tells the story of a Japanese America family just before and after the Pearl Harbor attack, and some of the inspiration for the novel comes from her personal family history. She shared some of the experiences her great grandparents and grandparents experienced at Wyoming’s Heart Mountain Relocation Center; her father was born at the camp.
Students and staff were fascinated by Huey’s stories and loved her emphasis to “look for those wanting to help” as she explained that during this traumatic and scary time there were specific individuals who stepped up to help in small and large ways.
