Welcome and Introductions

  1. SCC Business
    • District Trainings are required every year for every SCC member. Refer to the memo distributed at the meeting. This year they are on September 18, October 3 and October 8.
    • SCC Officers nominated and elected include: Kim Steenblik, SCC Chair; Kim Wedlick, SCC Vice-Chair; Pat Passey, secretary and Jessica Pohlman as PTSA liaison.
    • Bridget Rees, school librarian will update the website
    • Albion SCC operates under the guidelines of Roberts’ Rules of Order. Visitors are welcome at any of our meetings, but if they would like to speak, they need to post their topic on our agenda one week before the meeting.
    • SCCs are required to have a minimum of four meetings per year. Our planned meetings are: October 15, November 19, February 18, March 18, April 15, and May 20 if needed.
    • Members of the Teacher Recognition Committee include: Kim Steenblik, Rachel Bills, Cristina Cook, Christie Taylor, and Jessica Pohlman.

2. Principal Report

    • Gardner desires to continue last year’s momentum.
    • SCC members received a guided tour building updates completed over the summer including: a book vending machine in the library, media connections in the conference rooms, a new weight room for students and teachers, new furnishings in the faculty room, and other areas.
    • BLT teachers may request a substitute for a day so they can shadow a student through their day. This will help them better understand the student experience. It has revealed some excellent instruction and possibly a need for some alternatives to being seated for five hours a day.
    • Several conferences are planned for Albion teachers this year. All science teachers will attend Innovative Teaching Strategies in Chicago in November. All Social Studies teachers will be in Boston in November for the National SS Conference. Both of our art teachers are going to Louisville next March for the National Art Conference. Also, three of our Albion ELA teachers will be presenting at NASSP in Boston in November.
    • Albion’s All Community Reading book for this year is: The Many Assassinations of Samir, the Seller of Dreams by Daniel Nayeri. Teachers will use material from this book in their curriculum.
    • We receive funds from having cell towers on school property. It was proposed to use these funds for teacher rewards, food/treats for students and classroom furnishings.
    • Albion has some facility needs including a 6th grade science room with water access, general storage, and upgrades in the Kiva to the lighting and sound systems. The SCC members will be contacting members of the school board regarding our requests.
    • The Vice-principals are receiving notices of kids being “written up” for doing good things, and then calling their parents.

3. Counselor Report

    • Albion’s three counselors have met with over 350 students for far this year.

5.Closing Comments and Adjournment

    • Albion PTSA is sponsoring a family activity night on October 3.
